Oxygen Metabolism

Aerobic organism - An aerobic organism or aerobe is an organism that has an oxygen based metabolism. Aerobes, in a process known as cellular respiration, use oxygen to oxidize substrates (for example sugars and fats) in order to obtain energy.

Oxygen depletion - Hypoxia or oxygen depletion is a phenomenon that occurs in aquatic environments as dissolved oxygen (DO; molecular oxygen dissolved in the water) becomes reduced in concentration to a point detrimental to aquatic organisms living in the system. Dissolved oxygen is typically expressed as a percentage of the oxygen that would dissolve in the water at the prevailing temperature and salinity (both of which affect the solubility of oxygen in water; see oxygen saturation and underwater).

Cori cycle - The Cori cycle refers to the recycling of lactate or lactic acid produced by muscle during anaerobic metabolism, the lactate is converted to glucose by the liver. When the ATP needs of a cell outpace its oxygen supply is limited, muscle cells produce ATP through lactic acid fermentation.

Oxygen toxicity - Oxygen toxicity or oxygen toxicity syndrome is severe hyperoxia caused by breathing oxygen at elevated partial pressures. The high concentration of oxygen damages cells.
